JAVA PROGRAMMER

Position Title: Java programmer
Based in: Brazil, Porto Alegre
Reports to: Instrodi software team leader
Period: ASAP for the duration of 2 years

BACKGROUND

Social TRade Organisation, STRO is a Research & Development network working in the field of micro-credit, development of small and medium enterprises and strengthening of local economies through networks of exchange with an own complementary currency. STRO has developed together with its Brazilian partner organisation Instrodi software called Cyclos intended for use in complementary currency systems.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB
  • Contribute to the development of the Cyclos open source software project.
  • Co-operate with remote developing teams in different countries.
MAIN DUTIES
  • Contribute to writing and producing ready-to-use manuals for the open source products to be used at (potential) partner organisations.
  • Co-operate with remote developing teams in different countries.
  • Contribute to the development of the Cyclos open source software project
  • Programming activities of software (Java)
  • Participating in the daily discussions, brainstorming sessions and meetings of the software team.
  • Discussions with partner organisations on the best solutions for the demanded adaptations in the open source software product.
  • Provide technical guidance and supervision to Cyclos users.
  • Effective briefing of new features, communications, and training.
  • Review and comment technical reports & correspondence.
  • Support the activities of other staff working in Cyclos (as necessary).
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Java Programmer:
  • Works in collaboration with the other Java programmers in the Instrodi software team
  • Works under the direction of and in collaboration with the Instrodi software team manager.
  • Works in collaboration with, seeks input from and provides feedback to the Instrodi software team manager.
  • Nurtures stable working relationships with organisations and individuals in partner organisations, be it community, provincial, national, regional and international levels.
  • Shall cultivate a supportive and cooperative working relationship with Instrodi and STRO staff
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

This vacancy is financed by the PSO Crossover programme which is based on the principle of giving the opportunity to invest in “brain gain” and counter the effects of “brain drain”. This means that the candidate must be a first or second generation migrant from Brazil (preferably) or another Latin American country living in the Netherlands (having a Dutch residency permit).

REQUIREMENTS
  • Solid understanding of and experience with Java for Web Development and the frameworks Struts, Spring and Hibernate.
  • Familiar with the following technologies: XML, UML, SQL, ANT, CVS, AJAX, Junit and JavaScript.
  • Proven track record, 3-5 years of professional experience as Java Programmer.
  • Ability to work within an international development team.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English (both spoken and written) and Portuguese or Spanish.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to pass on skills and knowledge to others.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.
  • Self-motivation and an ability to work with minimum supervision.

TRAVEL

The Java Programmer will be stationed in Porto Alegre. Some travelling in Brazil, Uruguay and other Latin American countries might be possible.
