Biofuel production and use in rural Honduras: Gota Verde

Today the use of substitutes for fossil fuels is rising, accelerated by rising oil prices. Renewable energy, particularly biofuels, is becoming progressively more important worldwide. Moreover, the access to sustainable energy is recognised as a key factor in sustainable development and poverty-alleviation in developing countries.

Gota Verde: about the project

The objective of this three-year project is the promotion of small-scale production and use of biofuels for local consumption in marginal rural areas of Honduras.

How will this be done? The transfer of knowledge will follow an integrated approach, focusing on three components:

  • Ensuring that the most appropriate technology is used: technology that is suited to local conditions (crops cultivation and engine adaptations).
  • Sustainable financial mechanisms, such as favourable credits and opportunities to ease investment costs for poor households over the long term.
  • Removing problematic structural conditions that make sustainable energy policies difficult in Honduras

Where? Northern Honduras (with dissemination activities in Central America).
