Abstract

This study evaluates the usefulness of complementary currencies to promote local community development and more specifically the effectiveness of the complementary currency called Rubi in the Southern Brazilian neighbourhood Rubem Berta, during the first year of its implementation within the framework of the project “Change the face of Rubem Berta’ . This was done through studying a probability random sample survey within the group of prosumers user’s . The results demonstrate that so far the project has added an average 10% increase in the monthly income attributed to the use of the complementary currency in their local transactions. The study also demonstrates that the local business users of Rubi have not yet perceived the advantages of the complementary currency as they have no occasions where to spend it according to their needs. Finally, some recommendations are made with regard to the promotion of trade and the involvement of local businesses and the project’s monitoring and evaluation process.
